Acer Predator Triton 500 Review

The new predator is another one of those thin and light gaming machines that are coming out in 2019 but despite its slim design, the laptop houses rock-solid hardware, the best part of the hardware being the new RTX graphic card line up from Nvidia. The predator has an appealing design which “coincidently” looks and feels a lot like its competitor, the MSI GS65. The Predator Triton doesn’t have any sparkling features that make it stand out of the other laptops in its competition but there is one thing that makes it a lot better than the other laptops in its competition and it is the price that it’s available for. The base model of the Acer predator Triton is available for a price of $1,799 with RTX 1060 graphics unit and 512 SSD storage. But, is this laptop worth buying above the choices of laptops like the MSIGS65 and Razer Blade 15? Well, for that here’s our full review for the new Acer Predator Triton 500.

Design and Features

The predator Triton 500 has a design that is not too fancy like other hardcore gaming laptops but not too simple either like a Razer Blade 15 mercury edition, all in all, it’s a design that you can probably live with. On the back of the lid is the Predator logo that lights up, even by looking at the laptop from a distance people would easily be able to tell that it’s a gaming laptop because of the logo and the colored exhaust vents that the Triton 500 has. You can easily buy this device online using Mobikwik Add Money Offer with great discounts.

The Predator Triton 500 has a decent set of ports on both sides. The right side packs ports including two USB-A ports, a DisplayPort, and a Thunderbolt 3 port. Using the DisplayPort, you can directly run an external G-sync panel as it is directly plumbed to the GeForce RTX 2060. On the left side, you get to see an HDMI port, analog mic, and a headset jack. Along with it, there is also a USB-A port, a charging port, and an ethernet port that can support 2.5 Gigabit using a Killer E3000 controller.

The screen on the predator Triton is just fine. The screen has a 1080p Full HD resolution with a refresh rate of about 144Hz and even though the price of the laptop can go up to a whopping $3,000 for the highest specifications, no variant of the laptop offers a Display with 4K resolution.

The webcam is placed on the top of the screen right where it should be but sadly it doesn’t have an infrared sensor so probably no windows hello for the predator Triton 500. The bezels around the screen are also minimal and so is the top chin, while the bottom chin is a bit large with a difficult to look at hinge design it is still acceptable looking at the price of this device unless of course, you buy the $3,000 variant.

Talking about the keyboard, it has a nice layout and the keys are comfortable to use. The keyboard does support RGB lighting but instead of having customization for every key the keyboard on the predator Triton 500 only has zoned RGB lighting which is at most customizable up to 3 zones. The speaker grill is situated on top of the keyboard there is also a turbo button right by the speaker grill that lets you put the laptop in turbo mode without opening any software or using some keyboard shortcuts. The deck is also spacious there is plenty of room for everything, the trackpad is also very smooth and runs on windows precision drivers. However, some people might find that the trackpad is a little bit small as compared to what other laptops are offering.

Performance and Specifications

The laptop is mainly available in 3 variants the base variant is priced at about $1,799 and comes with a 16GB RAM, RTX 2060 graphic card and 512GB of SSD storage, the most advanced variant is available at about $2,999 and comes with a massive 32GB RAM, RTX 2080 graphic card and 1TB of SSD storage. There are other versions ranging in between $1,799 and $2,999 depending on the RAM, Storage space and Graphics card you choose. Every predator Triton 500 from the base variant to the most advanced variant comes with the same i7-8750H processor that is clocked at about 2.20 GHz and has six cores. Every variant also has the houses the same 1080p matte panel with a refresh rate of 144Hz.

The performance on the Acer Predator Triton 500 is just what you would expect from a laptop in this price range, the frame rates are awesome you will be able to play most of the games with a frame rate above 60fps and without giving up much on the graphics. The ray tracing feature that’s part of the RTX graphic unit will also be a huge help for your laptop when playing the new and high-end games like metro exodus or battlefield 5. Mentioned earlier, the turbo button really boost the laptop up. Although on different laptops, the turbo button has different usage. In Predator Triton 500. it boosts the GPU with over 10% more power while CPU doesn’t feel any power change. There are no thermal throttling issues in the laptop for the most part but the fans get very loud while in the turbo mode.

On Cinebench R15 nT CPU test (multi-threaded tasks), this Acer Predator product performed unbelievably good. Coming at decent pricing, this is something that will blow your mind. The device scored 1,108 points with Core i7 8th generation processor. The device marginally gets ahead of Dell’s G7 with the same processor and 1060 Max-Q GPU. Although, MSI’s GS65 left it behind with its GTX 1060 GPU and same CPU unit. On single-threaded, both MSI’s GS65 and Acer’s Triton 500 stood equal. When it came to encoding a 1080p file, Triton 500 showed its real power and beat laptops like MSI’s GS65, Dell’s G7, and Alienware 17 R4 with ease.

Battery Life

The Acer Predator Triton 500 comes with an 82 watt-hour battery which ran for 6 hours on the playback test running 4K video in airplane mode. This is not something that will blow your mind but a decent workout for any user. A laptop geek might find it a bit sub-par when compared to other similar level model but it is still good. Moreover, if you are looking for a technical officer job then it can be the best chance to try it.

Final Verdict

The Triton 500 is an awesome laptop it has an affordable price; it gives you the newest RTX graphic card series from Nvidia and offers good and fast performance. It doesn’t compete with any high-end laptops but laptops like MSI GS65 Stealth Thin, the Asus ROG Zephyrus S, and the Razer Blade 15. Unsurprisingly, it brings out the best among all of them. Yes, it is one heck of a powerful beast that is priced at a fair price. But, it also has its downsides like it is very difficult to upgrade the RAM or internal memory. Also, the lack of per-key RGB lighting also brings a bit of downside for this lappy. Along with it, the battery on the Triton 500 is also considerably small but all in all the laptop is a total package and can be considered a better option than the MSI GS65 Stealth.
