Darren McGavin was an Emmy-winning American actor whose prolific career encompassed half a century. Born in Spokane, Washington, McGavin claimed to have been a child runaway who went on to begin his film career while working as a set painter for Columbia Pictures. In 1954, he originated roles in Broadway productions of My 3 Angels and The Rainmaker, and the following year starred in David Lean’s Summertime and Otto Preminger’s The Man with the Golden Arm. McGavin had his greatest successes on television, portraying the title character in Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer, and starring in the NBC Western, Riverboat. He left “an enduring mark on popular culture as the grizzled has-been crime reporter in the 1970s series Kolchak: The Night Stalker“. McGavin won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his recurring role opposite Candice Bergen on the sitcom Murphy Brown. His film credits include Happy Hell Night, Billy Madison, Airport ’77, Hot Lead and Cold Feet and A Christmas Story.
