Judit Varga Tweeted About Law Back

Judit Varga, Hungary’s justice minister, who was in Brussels for Monday’s hearing, tweeted that her country would be “putting the law back into the rule of law debate”. She referred to a 158-page riposte published on Monday by Budapest, in which it restated why it thought the proceedings were unwarranted and challenged the legal basis and motives for invoking them.

Hungary is accused of undermining the independence of the judiciary, undermining freedom of the press and education, and poor treatment of migrants. The procedure was put into operation a year ago in response to a report by Green Left MEP Judith Sargentini.

MEP Sophie in ‘t Veld (D66) responded: “Hungary is not being burned at the stake for rejecting mass immigration, but for violating human rights, breaking the rule of law and breaking EU laws. Don’t play the martyr. “

Concerns of the Netherlands

“The concerns of the Netherlands are in many countries,” said it is still too early to say how things are going. “I think we really need to see progress in the coming period, and if it doesn’t, we should continue with this procedure.”

Before meeting 26 EU affairs ministers, the interior minister, Judit Varga, said member states should “stand on the basis of law” when scrutinizing Hungary’s record. “I expect them to avoid double standards; I expect them to prove this procedure is not a political witch-hunt.”

Varga wrote on Twitter that Hungary was being “put on the pillory for rejecting mass immigration” – a claim that sparked a swift rebuttal from the Dutch MEP Sophie in ‘t Veld of the Democrats 66 party.

Hungary has attacked EU claims of democratic backsliding by Budapest as “politically motivated, biased, and factually incorrect” as the bloc held its first disciplinary hearing into the allegations.

Why the Government introduced new laws?

The Budapest broadside also called for a “timely closure” of the Article 7 disciplinary process, launched by the European Parliament a year ago after prime minister Viktor Orban’s government introduced new laws on the judiciary, media, and foreign universities.
